Kis Keya is a Belgian artist living and working in Ghana until the end of the summer.
“I wanted to come to Africa. I tried to find a place to stay and create. Mostly for movies. I wanted to meet people who are working in film because I heard the movie scene was growing in Ghana.
Before now I had never gone to any English speaking countries.”
Expression:
“My expression depends on what I want to say, the theme, how I want to express. I use paintings, movies, writing…”
Experience:
“Ghana is a different experience than I have had everywhere else in Africa. I am an artist and I live for my art. I don’t know if I can live here because Accra is quite expensive.
On working with ATW:
“It is something special to create with somebody. Questions you ask at the start are important. What do you want to do? It is important to find a common idea. It was good that we are both women so right away we are talking about female condition. Also helpful that we both dance and found relevant poetry to help create the piece. We worked very fast, once the common idea was established.”
On working in Ghana:
“The process for making film is longer, especially with money constraints. I would like to go back to Belgium and find more funding. I want to create independent film, not mainly for entertainment. The challenge is finding a producer for this project. I still have some time, I don’t know if I can find people who will work for little or no money.”
Kis Keya collaborated with Accra Theatre Workshop to create a piece called “Red”. Catch it on Saturday 29th March 2014 during the evening performances at Nubuke Foundation.
